Anybody who has sinusitis will have nasal congestion. Nasal congestion means nose block, some pain, running nose, discharge, headache. Sometimes they will have what we call as a post nasal drip, that is nasal secretion is dripping from the back of your throat causing a sore throat and if the symptoms do not come down with regular home remedies, paracetamol, antihistamines like avil, cetirizine, steam inhalation, saline water gargling, betadine gargling. Then obviously you have to rule out a bacterial infection. If it is a bacterial infection, an appropriate antibiotic is to be given for the appropriate dose and the duration. Sinus infections of bacterial origin requires around 7 to 14 days of therapy to for complete resolution of the infection. Until and unless this infection clears off completely. You will have certain symptoms. Cough is a protective reflex given by nature or God to prevent irritation to the lower airway. So whatever it is irritating, I will try to cough it off. Unless the primary cause is taken care of, the cough surely will come down. So if somebody is looking or a complete cure for a cough which has been there for over a week, it is not realistic. It may not happen with the best of medications and generally we would require for 48 to 72 hours. This is the duration of time we need for most of the symptoms to come down. So 3 day of medications is what is recommended before we change it.
